What is RSS?

I will explain RSS very quickly. If you don’t know what is RSS and what is RSS Reader, it can sound and look like bogy. Actually its not so hard and I will keep it simple. You can also watch a video with explanation.
In a nutshell, an RSS feed is code that can be created with your blog that allows your readers to subscribe to it. And the icon for subscribing always looks something like this one on the picture. It can be modified and get different designs but in most cases it is easily recognized. Subscribed reader will not have to check your blog on a regular basis to see if you have made an update. They will automatically be informed each time you make a change. When you make a new post on your blog, your subscribed readers will get that post in the form of RSS feed.
Thats it, you know what is RSS, now. In addition, don’t be confused if you find synonyms for RSS, which is shorten from Really Simple Syndication. The synonyms are atom and xml.
If you are thinking about subscribing to someone’s blog but you’re hesitating to give away your email address, then choosing one RSS Reader is the best way to go. RSS gives you absolute, 100% complete control over the situation, what means if you don’t like the content, you can make it disappear as fast as you can open new web page. Yes, with just one click.
What is RSS Reader?
The post you made will appear in RSS Reader program and this kind of delivery is called feed. RSS Reader is a specialized program for reading RSS feeds. Don’t panic, its very simple. As a matter of fact there is a big possibility you are already using some of them, even if you are not aware its RSS reader.
Explanation of RSS reader in few sentences. So, what is it? If you use personalized home page services like My Yahoo or My MSN, you already have RSS feed capabilities integrated. That is how syndicated content like weather, news and stock quotes come out on your own Yahoo! or MSN page. Its now on you to add to that page content from any blog or other web site that provides RSS feed updates.
Adding feeds from particular blog to reader is very easy. From the blog you like to be notified for next posts, just click on RSS icon, and you will be able to choose from variety of RSS readers. Actually, you can add it to RSS reader or alternatively add it to your Mozilla Firefox browser and latter access the feeds from your Firefox toolbar by using the Live Bookmarks function.
There are online settled RSS Readers like Google Reader, Newsgator, Bloglines, etc, but also download-able specialized programs (also called RSS Readers). I use Newsgator and FeedReader. You can download both for free. Newsgator is great because it synchronizes online and desktop version.
