Automatic Back-up of Online Bookmarks

diigo - bookmarking service
About a month ago, when I downloaded Mozilla Firefox version 3.1 (still in beta) I lost part of my Firefox bookmarks. Though I were partially aware of that possibility I was lazy enough to skip backing up process of the bookmarks, thinking that my regular hard disc back up is already doing that. I was wrong, since your Firefox bookmarks need to be exported as a file to be backed from the hard disc.
The damage wasn’t so big since I’ve already used Delicio.us and Ma.gnolia as online bookmarks and I only lost about dozen of my Firefox bookmarks. So, I remembered and recovered some of the links and bookmarked them at Ma.gnolia adding them to the collection I’ve already had there.
But just few days after that Ma.gnolia had a database crash leading to bookmarks lose. Though I have understandings (at least I think so) for online business and problems it can bring, I was so furious. It was like some conspiracy against me, first lost of Firefox then Ma.gnolia bookmarks. Ma.gnolia offered some ways of bookmarks recovery through FriendFeed and Google cache, but if you had any private bookmarks they have gone forever – Adios!
All those impairments forced me to think how to expel any similar damages and to do that in good time management manner. Finding and using better established service may be a solution, but only partially. How secure are your online bookmarks? Ma.gnolia’s accident showed me they are not so untouchable and if we talk about sticking with giants like Yahoo! or Google, even if they don’t have some of social bookmarking features, but do you know that this week even Google’s Gmail was unavailable for few hours. So, I searched a little for perfect solution …
Solution – Automation back up of online bookmarks
Yes, you can, from time to time, export the file from Delicious, Google, Yahoo, or any other online bookmarking service you use, but here I am talking about automation.
First you need Diigo account. At Diigo you can set your account to back automatically your bookmarks to your Delicious account. It’s that simple, every time you bookmark a web page to the Diigo account – it will automatically, in few seconds, be saved at the Delicios, too. Diigo is younger than some other online bookmarking services, but this way if anything goes wrong with Diigo, I can reach my bookmarks at Delicious, or even vice versa. Also, at Diigo, there are some great social features.
That’s it, further you can explore compatibility with other social bookmarking services.
